Since 2013, GDC rules allow you to book directly with a dental hygienist — no dentist appointment or referral required. It's a simple, convenient way to keep on top of your gum health and hygiene between check-ups.
Plaque can harden into tartar within a couple of days — and once it does, brushing and flossing alone can't remove it. Only a dental professional can. Regular hygienist visits clear this buildup, catch early signs of gum disease, and give you tailored advice on improving your technique at home. Good oral health has also been linked to broader health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and other conditions.
Thorough removal of plaque and tartar, followed by polishing to brighten teeth and freshen breath.
A full check of your gums to catch early signs of gum disease before they become a bigger problem.
Practical, tailored guidance on brushing technique, diet, and caring for fillings, bridges, or implants.
A protective fluoride application to strengthen enamel and help prevent decay.
The only exception to Direct Access is teeth whitening, which still requires a prescription from one of our dentists.
There's no single answer — it depends on your individual oral health. As a general guide:
Our hygienists will recommend a personalised schedule based on your own needs at your first visit.
Experienced, GDC-registered, and genuinely good at putting nervous patients at ease.
Hygienists are brilliant at prevention and gum health, but they're not able to diagnose dental conditions — that remains the role of a dentist. If our hygienists spot anything that needs a closer look during your visit, they'll recommend you book in with one of our dentists promptly. We'd always recommend keeping up with regular dentist check-ups alongside your hygiene appointments, rather than relying on hygiene visits alone.
